Lubumbashi Biennial

RN1 Complex2024The performance is part of the Trajet Ngamba project in Lubumbashi, co‑commissioned by Tate Liverpool, the International Slavery Museum and the Lubumbashi Biennial.

This performance at the Biennial of Lubumbashi resulted from a 40-day journey in Kongo-Central that explored the sophisticated legacy of trade networks established by postcolonial Congolese pioneers, a legacy which includes her own father.  The heart of this trade networks was the Route Nationale 1 - RN1.

The local dignitaries (chef Coutumiers) explained major nodes of RN1, operational systems, and the original trade incentives. All their knowledge was traced on a textile, a collaborative effort to map the trade networks. This textile is part of the performance.
